Once the boys were gone and Hannah was shooed away, Lois gripped Sly by the shoulders and made him look into her eyes. “Sly! Sly, get a hold of yourself!”As if it took a supreme effort, Sly met her eyes.

“You listen to me, Sly. We’ve all been friends for a very long time. You know the boys are close, so that’s no surprise.”

Sly went to speak in his defense, but Lois stopped him. “Maude and I suspected something, but we kept it to ourselves.” Lois gave Mel a quick glance, knowing she had kept it from him as well, then continued, “But, we know this is a phase the boys are going through. Think about it, Sly. They are very comfortable together. It’s not scary to be together. But in no way has this decided their sexuality as adults. So stop reacting like an animal and see this for what it is. An adolescent phase.”

Sly seemed to take a breath.

In shock, Mel asked his wife, “Lois, what do you mean you and Maude suspected the boys? Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because…” Lois threw up her hands as if it were obvious. “Mel, think about it. You know your reaction would be close to Sly’s. You both would think that just because they may have touched each other that they are now branded homosexuals. Nonsense! They’re young. They have experimented. That’s all there is to it.”

“That’s the biggest load of crap I have ever heard,” Sly snapped. “I never experimented with another boy. You’re deluded!”

“Sly, calm down,” Maude insisted. “Getting violent and beating Zachary won’t do any good.”

“They are to be separated from now on, do you hear me? Zachary is going off to Boston to college. That’s it!” Sly waved his hands. “No more contact between the two of them! And you three better cooperate or I’ll send Zachary to boot camp, you got that?”

Lois exchanged sad looks with her husband.

“Come on, we’ve got a plane to catch, Sly.” Maude tapped her husband’s arm. “But, I’m warning you, Sly. Leave the boy alone. You’ve done enough damage.”
